Traditional crafts

"karakuri" is the word that means "mechanical device" essensially, but particularly means Japanese traditional mechanical dolls, models, or devices for entertainment.
We introduce a great karakuri maker in 19th century Tanaka Hisashige.
One of his work Mannen-jimeishou is the clock, which displays the Western time, the old Japanese time, and even the movement of the sun and the moon and works during 1 year by 1 winding of the spring.
He made the karakuri archer doll in that video.


Traditional manners and customs

Traditional music and theater

Kyogen is a style of theater since the Middle age.
It is comedy by unique speaking like a song.
Kyogen is related to "Nou", mainly tragedic style theater.
Kabuki is a style of theater since 17th century.
The Edo Goverment banned actress from act so all characters,even female characters are acted by man.Outstanding makeup and stage direction are the characteristics.
Nagauta is a style of music by shamisen since Edo period.
They are traditional female entertainer who play dance or instruments in party or on stage.
Rakugo is a style of comedy. It is played with pantomime by only one person.

Others

Japanese exercise with music on radio or TV broadcast...perhaps strange custom for foreigners:D

Students have school lunch until junior high school, and they have bento, a lunch in box like a picnic which their parent cook in high school. Of course there are some who go to cafeteria.
Sadou is the manner of making and drinking tea.
It is a culture to cultivate one's spirit that have so complicated manners.
The fixed patterns of manners cultivate the unperturbed mind, and The feeling of serving delicious tea for your guest cultivate the respect for others.
Ikebana is the manner of flower arangement. Like sadou, it is so meaningful aspects.
